Heparin and the adrenal cortex.

چکیده
The occasional occurrence of thrombosis after operation has stimulated many attempts to demonstrate an increased coagulability of the blood in the post-operative period. Most of these attempts gave negative or equivocal results, probably because the methods employed were not sensitive enough to record the changes occurring in the complex process of blood coagulation. Nevertheless several investigators (Bergquist, 1945 ; Greig, 1949) reported a shortening of the whole blood clotting time soon after operation. Crafoord (1937), in the course of an investigation into the prevention of post-operative thrombosis by heparin, noted that a given dose of heparin had less effect in prolonging the clotting time in the first 48 hours after operation than in normal people, or in the later post-operative period. It was therefore considered that a new investigation of the coagulability of the blood after operation, as measured by a heparin clotting test, and an attempt to relate the changes observed to the increased activity of the adrenal cortex occurring as a resuit of the "'stress" of operation (Selye, 1950), might be of interest.

Effects of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes on Micro-Anatomical Changes of Adrenal Gland in Male Wistar Rats
Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
متن کاملEffect of high concentration of testosterone enanthate on histometrical structure of the adrenal cortex in male rats
Testosterone enanthate (TE) is used by many athletes as a muscle builder. Previous studies showed that high concentration of the drug in plasma may affect the natural function of endocrine glands, specially the secretion of the adrenocortical hormones. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of high concentration of TE on histometrical structure of adrenal cortex in male r...
متن کاملThe effects of subchronic social and isolation stresses on learning and memory trend in male rats
Introduction: Psychological stresses influence brain functions such as learning and memory. Environmental factors like types and durations of stress affect brain responsiveness. This study investigated the effects of two subchronic social and isolation stresses on learning, memory, adrenal glands weight and corticosterone levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. Methods: Eighteen male ...
متن کاملAre there subtypes of the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor?
We have compared the properties of the [3H]Ins(1,4,5)P3-binding sites from a number of tissues in an attempt to determine if heterogeneity exists within the Ins(1,4,5)P3-receptor family. The binding of Ins(1,4,5)P3 was characterized in detail by using membranes prepared from human uterine smooth muscle and bovine adrenal cortex. Ins(1,4,5)P3 exhibited an approx. 5 times greater affinity for the...
متن کاملRestoration of adrenal function after bilateral adrenal damage due to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT): a case report
INTRODUCTION Patients with bilateral adrenal damage due to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia usually need lifelong steroid substitution. So far, no data exists about the natural evolution of such a condition, especially about adrenal function recovery and the real need for lifelong steroids. CASE PRESENTATION An 81-year-old Caucasian woman with bilateral adrenal damage due to heparin-induced t...
